Components involved in Run off river scheme.

In Run off river scheme number of components involved is more.Storage is not involved in this scheme. Diversion structure is provided to raise the water level in river. The raised water is diverted to intake structure.
Here components involved are :

  1. Intake structure.
  2. Water conducting System (open channel or tunnel).
  3. Surge shaft or Forebay.
  4. Penstock or pressure shaft
  5. Power house.
  6. Tail race channel or tunnel.
Tunnels, surge shaft, pressure shaft all are underground structures.

Types of Hydro power Plants

 There are two major types of hydro power plants.
  1. Dam Toe Power House - Here water intake structure and turbine are very near to each other and head is governed by height of water storage behind the dam. Refer figure 1. Here water conducting system is very small.

 2. Run of River Scheme - Here intake structure and Turbine are very far from each other and head is governed by the vertical distance between intake and power house sites not by the storage. Here water conducting system is very long.



Hydro Power Engineer

Hydro power sector is one of the booming sector in Asia. Knowledge required in this sector is very vast. It comprise of knowledge of Electrical , Mechanical and Civil engineering. As we all know hydro power sector develops in remote hilly areas . All the civil components are site and design head oriented. Civil engineers have to find out the most reliable and economical way for it feasibility. Its a very vast field. Any mistake in choosing a site could make the whole project uneconomical. So every hydro power project before its construction stage go through various states. Its wide field comprises of my field together. Its not job of 1 or 2 years. It needs at least
4 to 5 years in all.
